What causes auto-dimming other than the auto-brightness feature?
Actually the brightness was up all the way and the screen was still half as bright as my wife’s iPhone. It turns out that under Accessibility->Zoom->Zoom filter there is a low light selection in the drop down menu that was somehow selected. Turning off the filters fixed the dim screen!
