iMessage filling iCloud

Hi -- my Messages app is taking up 5gb of iCloud storage. I've looked in settings on my mac and my iPhone, but can't see how to free up the space without deleting messages. I'm nostalgic and don't want to delete the messaged from my MacBook. Googling shows some options that my devices don't have about storing messages in the cloud.

I'm on High Sierra on the MacBook, and 11.3.1 on my iPhone. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Deleting the messages is the only way to free up space because they are included in your phone's iCloud backup. One option might be to backup your phone to iTunes instead of iCloud. That should free up some space if you then delete the iCloud backups.

Manage your iCloud storage

Backups – Choose Method

Back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
