why is the fan running on my MacBook Air

The fan on my MBA has been running most of the day, at least since I noticed it this morning. It is now early evening.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

The fans all run all the time.

Thanks, Kappy. There was something going on with Carbon Copy Cloner. Something it was trying to do but not succeeding--I think some backups. I rebooted, started CCC, and ran the backups that seemed to have hung it up. The fan got quieter. (It's hardly noticeable when it's running slowly.)
