First a disclaimer. I’m talking here about genuine charger supplies from reputable manufacturers like Apple, Belkin, or even (yuk) other smartphone manufacturers. I am NOT talking about counterfeits, Noname Cheapo from a corner store or gas station, or any other product of the Great Oriental Copy Machine.

Your iPhone will charge from any charger with a USB which will connect the Lightning cable. The charger is just a source of volts and amps. The phone controls the process and will take as many amps as it wants up to the limit where the charger can’t provide more. The rating in (milli)Amps is simply the maximum the device can deliver, rather like your car has a 300hp engine but your right foot never asks for more than200.

Standard basic output is 500mA, which will charge the phone but probably rather slowly and it might struggle a bit if you’re adding load by using the phone while it charges. Next common step up is 1000mA (1 Amp) which is about the standard supplied with many phones (not sure what comes with iPhone 7) and is generally more than adequate. You will also find a lot of car chargers with about 2A rating which is more than one phone will need, so there is a bit of spare capacity and the phone can take all it wants without getting hot or overloading the supply.

Bottom line - if you can find a reputable dual output approx 2 Amp car charger at a decent price, go for it because it will also be able to charge your iPad or a second phone Without feeling the strain. More than about 2.5A and more than 2 output ports tends to be where price gets a bit non linear also avoid unless you need the extra capacity.
