I am having this maddening beep that recurs a lot on my MacBook. It's the Basso sound. I have sound notifications turned off for almost everything still it beeps randomly. The default system notification sound is Funk, so it's not the default. How can I find out what is doing this? Help! It's driving me bats. I don't want to turn the volume off all the way obviously...

I finally found the answer by accident. I have notifications turned off for Mail, but I have a gadget SpamSieve that turns on annoying sounds by default. Seriously spamsieve? Play a notification whenever I get a good email? what decade was this written in? Ugh. No this.
In my experience with "Basso" it is a sound usually reserved for a error of some kind or inability to complete a task.
I would check under System Preferences > Notifications and see what apps play sounds for notifications.
Maybe you can narrow it down that way. Some app preferences give options for their sounds, maybe one has Basso listed.

Apparently Basso is also the default sound for Reminders. I don't use the Reminders app so I cannot verify this. Is that one of the items you left enabled with sound for notifications?
wealthychef, you can easily Google it "Reminders basso". Not sure you could customize it to something different. It seems lots of people would love to change it. 😁 You can just disable the sound alert for it, see if that is even the culprit. Not sure if Calendar uses it too.
I already went through the Notifications preferences as I think I mentioned and there is no clue there. The connection with errors is not lost on me and it is in fact what is annoying about it. It's an alert sound which calls attention to nothing. No icon bounces, no error messages are in the Notifications panel, etc. Seems like I'm going to have to do extensive testing. Perhaps if I only have one app at a time running, it will reveal something. I use a lot of apps...
I did leave Reminders on and Calendar. I wonder if there is a way to change the notification sound. How did you determine that the default sound is Basso for Reminders? I cannot find that setting anywhere yet... thanks
