why is my macbook beeping (playing Basso) all the time?

I am having this maddening beep that recurs a lot on my MacBook. It's the Basso sound. I have sound notifications turned off for almost everything still it beeps randomly. The default system notification sound is Funk, so it's not the default. How can I find out what is doing this? Help! It's driving me bats. I don't want to turn the volume off all the way obviously...

I already went through the Notifications preferences as I think I mentioned and there is no clue there. The connection with errors is not lost on me and it is in fact what is annoying about it. It's an alert sound which calls attention to nothing. No icon bounces, no error messages are in the Notifications panel, etc. Seems like I'm going to have to do extensive testing. Perhaps if I only have one app at a time running, it will reveal something. I use a lot of apps...
