I want to stay on Sierra (10.12.6). What happens to Messages if you turn on Messages in iCloud on iOS devices, but not Mac?

Your Mac will not participate in Messages in the Cloud. Doing so would require at least MacOS 10.13.5.
I understand that Messages on Mac wouldn't sync through iCloud, but will the Mac still be able to send and receive they way it always has before?
Can you still use Messages on Sierra (10.12.6) if you enable Message in iCloud on iOS devices?
