2011 iMac very slow when booting up

My mid 2011 iMac 21" running OS Sierra 10.12.6 takes too long to boot up and open applications. I rarely restart the computer because of this. I also have the dreaded beachball appear more often than I'd like when I have multiple apps open. A few years ago I added additional RAM and am now at 8GB. I suspect that I need to add additional RAM but want to know if there are any other issues that are compromising the machine's performance.
