It's possible that MacAffee is contributing to the bad runtime that could herald a hard drive failure. I like to eliminate software issues first and then go at the hardware issues.

Were I in your shoes, I'd completely uninstall all of MacAffee FIRST, then restart the iMac, then run Etrecheck again. If the hard drive warning is still there, yes, get the drive replaced.

Check with Apple before hauling an bulky iMac through a mall. Apple's service policy† states that with some exceptions, they will provide parts and service support for five years after date of last production. For the Late 2012 iMac, last production was September 2013, so yours may be beyond the limit. If so, you can find an independent Apple service provider.

In the future if you want to get rid of malware or adware try Malwarebytes. It was developed by one of the top contributors to these forums and a recognized expert in computer security.

Also here's some food for thought about replacement of the drive:

Consider getting an external SSD drive, either USB or Thunderbolt, clone your boot drive to it and run off of it. The boot time will probably be faster than the 5400 rpm drive you currently have and it will be much faster in general operation. The upside to this is that you avoid the labor costs of installing the drive and can easily take it with you when you decide to upgrade your Mac.

The Thunderbolt external configuration can be quite a bit more than USB. I have one in anUSB 3 drive dock from MacSales.com

User uploaded file

which I use to boot into High Sierra occasionally. Once booted up it's had to tell I'm on the external as far a performance is concerned.

Again, just some food for thought.

Have an Apple Store replace the HD ASAP. Also, going forward some information. Mac OS was designed to be extremely secure and will remain so if simply kept up-to-date. It does NOT benefit in any fashion by having antivirus, cleaning or any third party "maintenance" apps installed. You have installed Macaffee AV which at best is 100% worthless and will only damage performance. At worst it can modify and damage Mac OS. I VERY STRONGLY recommend locating the developers instructions and then uninstall it. When you have the HD replaced and restore, ensure you do not re-install it. If you use any other third party security or maintenance apps, please check these forums first prior to installing them. Then experienced users can give you advice on what is garbage and what is of value.

SI am going through the EtreCheck report - deleting files that show "executable not found" - also looking at list of Unassigned Files that are shown to be on 'whitelist' denoted as 'probably ok' - would getting rid of those files as well mess anything up - machine seems to be firing on almost all cylinders......
