It depends. The primary type of "radiation" you have to worry about is heat. Depending on the machine you have and what you are doing with it, it can get very hot.

You should not use an Apple computer on any soft surface. Hard surfaces allow better cooling and air flow. So no it is not safe to use your computer on any soft surface.
