Mail taking up too much space!

I have emptied my mail folder. Deleted all messages. However it is still showing that mail is taking up 31G of space on my Mac Air. What steps can I take to fix this?

Mac Mail High Sierra storage issues I have read a few posts recently regarding endless problems with Mac Mail taking up too much disk storage. Just recently my Mail has started to take up way to much space. Is there a way that the cached emails can be deleted to free up disk space?

Mail using too much storage space. Mac Mail is using 224.11 GB storage. Erasing emails does not solve the problem. How to I free up storage and prevent it from happening again? I want all mail stored on the cloud.
