Mail app shows white screen then exits

I'm using Mail to access Exchange server and Gmail accounts on my iPhone 8+. Everything was working fine but yesterday I clicked on a large folder inside my Exchange mail tree, and the window went all white (no emails shown). From then on, every time I activate the Mail app, it shows a white screen for about 5 seconds and then exits. The Mail icon on the home screen shows red numbers (new incoming emails) but I can't see anything in Mail. I've rebooted the phone and even accepted the latest iOS update, thinking that might reset it, but no luck. I understand I can wipe the whole phone and restore, but I'm hoping someone knows how to fix this without that drastic step - why is Mail crashing and what can I do?

Hello Michael,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that after opening a large folder inside your Exchange mail tree, you can no longer view emails in the Mail app as the app will not show any of your emails only a blank screen and quits. The following article has steps you can take to resolve issues when an app unexpectedly quits:

If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support

If you continue to have issues with Mail after following the above steps, you may want to contact your system administrator for your Exchange account details so you can remove the Exchange account and then add it back again using the steps below:

If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.
Best Regards.
