My GPS is accurate but compass incorrect

If you have a case with magnetic closure - that will impact your compass reading

Take phone out of case and see if that fixes the compass issue?

Sounds like the compass needs recalibrating.

This can normally be resolved by waving the device around in a figure of 8 making sure to cover all axis’s.

Another update.

When I delete Google Maps and restart my phone all seems fine with Compass and Apple Maps.

I’m having the same problem on iPhone X.

There seems to be some sort of software conflict between the Compass and Apple Map apps.

The Compass App is accurate (and stays accurate) if I delete Apple Maps and restart my iPhone.

No, map applications do not get information from the compass. They get the information from the GPS chip. And from WiFi networks. And from cellular towers.

Do you have WiFi turned on? If you don't, turn it on. You do not have to be connected to a particular network. It can make a very big difference.

No, really, they're not the same. The compass in your phone uses a small magnetometer to detect the Earth's magnetic field. The GPS chip is radio transceiver that connects to various satellite networks. Turn off Settings>Privacy>Location Services and you'll see the Compass app still works.

We have tried all on your list. We have spoken to Apple Support and a Genius Bar appointment. They did not have an answer. They even replaced my phone due to another issue with blue tooth. The new phone compass is also inaccurate. Location services, resetting and so forth do not work unless on a temporary measure. Figure 8 movement also has no effect unless temporary. My house faces due south and we are surrounded virtually by fields. My compass sometimes says I am facing south but it can just as easily say I am facing east, west or north. My wife’s iPhones have the rollerball in a circle that works. My X doesn’t have this facil

A compass can't detect location, only direction. Are you actually asking about the Compass app? Or are you asking about the Maps app?

The figure 8 does not work on my X. I have had help from Apple chat and Genius Bar who agree my settings are correct. They even gave me a me phone as my old one had other issues. The new phone is exactly the same. Compass direction keeps changing. At the moment it says I am facing north although I know I am facing south. Later it is likely to tell me my house is facing east or west. My wife’s phone has the circle rolling ball calibration that works a treat. Sadly, this is not present on my X.
