Copy paste with URL into Messenger it changes

Hi

I work for a GPS tracking company and I have to send commands to the trackers via SMS.

I copy

gprs,phone.m2m,listener.awesome.com:11007,,# but when I paste into Messenger I get

gprs,telstra.m2m,listener.awesome.com:11007 <http://listener.awesome.com:11007/>,,#

I have 100's of trackers to do and it is so annoying, If I paste into Word it is fine but of I copy that and paste into messenger it is worse.

How do I stop it changing what I paste?

It also sometimes treats the 12 digit serial numbers of my devices as phone numbers but not always.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

If I past and URL it show a URL until I send.

Then like the Reply box on Discussions it "converts" it to a link.

Such as When the iMessages account will not Login

Messages version of this:-

Obviously here you can highlight what the link says now and show the URL is full

I cannot find a way to change this behaviour in Messages.

I looked in Messages > Edit Menu > Substitutions turning several of the options Off like Text Replacement, Smart Data and so on.

I looked in the Preferences but there is nothing there either.

Putting it in "quotes" sends it as plain text but I am not sure if those will be ignored later, I am guessing not.

On the whole the ability to send the tracker command messages from the Mac through the iPhone makes my job soooo much easier and was just justification to get the only Mac at work. It literally saves me hours of work. I have not explored the max number of numbers I can send to at once so far I have sent to about 30.

However if I need to change the server the tracker is reporting to, it of course has a url in it and that is where the problem crops up.

Using Textedit I managed to get it not to convert the command to a link so I copy from that but I would ultimately like it just to paste just the text of what is copied, unless there was an option to copy link.

Also in some instances when copying then pasting the devices serial numbers into Messages which are 12 digits long it treats those numbers as a phone number and pastes tel:123456789012

Thanks for you help at least now I have a work around.

The pasteboard will paste in varying formats depending on what is copied and what is requested by the recipient of the paste.

You can copy a full URL that only shows the display text, but the entire URL is copied. Depending on what app you paste it into, you may get the display text, or the URL. The destination context determines the result.

Yeah its Messages .. Obviously 😃 (early start and longer day..... )

it is handing off to the iPhone and it is sending the SMS but the text that gets pasted isn't what I copied.

I don't want any of the code behind it I just want the exact same as what I copied.

It can't be a feature so it must be a bug. i.e how often, if ever, do you want what is copied to be different to what you paste.
TXT's sent from messenger that is handing off to my iPhone to be sent as SMS works 99% of the time and make my job so much easier and I can send 1 command messages to 30 + trackers at once (Most of the commands to the trackers I send don't have web address in them) but if it has a web address in it, it is always different.you paste into Safari it is fine as is Chrome but paste into Messages its not what I copied. If you paste into notes it is fine.

Both my Macs do the exact same thing when pasting into Messages... so It is not a setting exclusive to my work Mac.

It is what is actually pasted that is different not, the SMS to iMessage that is ultimately sent. It does the exact same thing to an iMessage recipient so its nothing to do with the SMS part of it. So its is either a bug in the Messages App or a setting somewhere.

It appears to be when whatever program you are pasting from (Word, Messages, Outlook, Mail etc) has converted part of out to a web address then you copy it from that program and paste it into Messenger that is when paste is different you can correct it then send it as expected.

Yeah its Messages .. Obviously

Not really. There are other messaging apps. There used to be one called Instant Messenger.

It is what is actually pasted that is different not, the SMS to iMessage that is ultimately sent.

Based on those two statements, I would say it has to do with where you get the source string.

Does cmd-opt-shift-V make any difference?

Jun 4, 2018 6:30 PM in response to Barney-15E

It should not matter where the source material is coming from what is copied text should be exactly the same as what is pasted. The paste result is different if you paste into Messages and then Safari it different. It should and must be the same. It would be different if there is a copy as link option.

No cmd-optshuft-V makes no difference on either Mac. It is only when pasting into Messages its an issue and only if the source program or app has converted it into a link. Pasting the same copied text into other programs is fine.

I have figured out a work around for the time being but it would be nice if it were fixed.

You will also have to for give the Messages / Messenger mix up as it would seem my spell check is changing it for me but not every time.

Hi,

Edit (thought I was getting there)

Of course the setting isn't going to be in the App...

Thanks to Chris CA in this Thread turn off Rich URL previews in messages

Humm,

Testing that seems to be about seeing the icon/pictures in the Notification rather then the way it is converted on Send.

This says it cannot be turned Off.

How do I disable "rich links" in Messages in Sierra? - Ask Different

It links to here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206894 which does not mention it specifically but talks about all the other "Features" you can bring to party. (except we don't want to party, just communicate)
