Target Disk Mode via Thunderbolt not working

I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 that has a bad graphics processor. I took it into the Genius Bar and they verified that. The SSD seemed healthy when he ran a test.

I am trying to recover some files from the bad MBP using Target Disk Mode using a Thunderbolt cable to a Thunderbolt 3 adapter into my new MBP. Both are connected to AC power. I am able to boot the bad MBP into Target Disk Mode - it has the Thunderbolt icon and the Firewire icon floating around the screen.

When I connect the Thunderbolt cable and adapter between computers a Remote Disk popped up in Finder on the good MBP. When I open the Remote Disk nothing happens. Its empty. I thought the good MBP is supposed to see the other MBP as an external HD, not a Remote Disk?

MacBook Pro, null
