Back button doesn't work

Now I know that there has been some posts regarding the back button greys out, but I don't think they solved my problem. Here is my Macbook's info:

User uploaded file

Although it says that it's High Sierra 10.13.5, the problems started back in March or April (or maybe further, but that's when I actually noticed).

So here is me opening Safari:

And then I went to YouTube.

At this point, I notice that you actually can't go back to the blank page at the beginning. And then I clicked on Subscription, which kind of annoys me because I can't go back to YouTube home page.

User uploaded file

The annoyance just grows when I clicked on a video, and realised I can't go back to the previous page as well.

I have done all this on Chrome and it allows me to go back every time. At first, I thought there is something wrong with Safari history not keeping everything. But since I noticed how the back button behaves, I have started to believe that this might be a feature of Safari, not a bug; and I can live with it if only YouTube is affected. But this happens quite often with Google or other pages that I use for work. YouTube is just the most convenient example I can show to you.

The only "pattern" I found is that, Safari keeps the end-product (meaning the last page that is opened) and doesn't keep any of the previous page in history (so there is no going back). So either it's a feature or a bug, please see if you have a fix to it.

Sorry for the long post, but I just want to give you as much information as you might need.

Thank you very much!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. Please post if this worked or not.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once. Please post if this worked or not.

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. You can run the report for free at least once, but if you run it several times, at some point it will ask you to pay a license fee.

Backup your Mac.

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Library will appear between “Home” and “Computer” entries in the dropdown.

Select "Library" from the dropdown.

Click the “List” view button in the Finder toolbar.

Move these files to trash and test.

1. Scroll down the list, click open the Safari folder, select History files and LastSession.plist

Select ”Replace” from the dialog when it appears.

Try going to System Preferences/Users & Groups and remove all your login items. Then restart and don't open any applications except Safari. Test. If you still have problems, go to Safari/Preferences and disable your extensions. Test.

Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.
