Cannot Encrypt USB Drive

I used to be able to encrypt any drive by right-clicking on it and choosing "Encrypt DriveName".

Just bought a new 64GB USB drive and the encrypt option no longer shows up in the menu:

I don't see an option for encrypting in Disk Utility.

Help! What am I doing wrong?

Thank you very much!

Did you actually format that USB drive or did you just plug it in out of the package?

If you did just plug & play, it is probably formatted to FAT32 or ExFAT instead of HFS+ or APFS, which is why you don't see that option available in the right-click menu.

You will have to re-format the USB drive with the Disk Utility to either of those formats.
