wireless keyboard battery suddenly dead

My wireless keyboard, less than 1 year old, works fine, showing 100% battery, and then suddenly is dead. I plug it in, and the battery shows 88% for a long time, up to a day, then it shows 100% again and works for weeks. This makes no sense! Is the keyboard defective?

Possibly. If it is an Apple device less than one year old, get it in for warranty service.
