Printing from mobile devices

I have been an Airport user since 2004.

I purchased refurb late-model Airport Extreme a couple of years ago.

I have noticed something very irritating about my home-based office WiFi. It is impossible (or nearly so) to get mobile devices to print. Nothing seems to work.

MY PRIMARY PRINTER:

HP LaserJet 4100N (connected directly to Airport via prefabbed Ethernet cable; printer works fine handling print jobs from my iMac)

MOBILE DEVICES:

Apple iPad Mini (2013), running iOS 11

2 Motorola Android smartphones (G4 Play running Android 6 and E4 running Android 7)

How do I get this to work?

iPad Mini Wi-Fi, iOS 11.2.2, 2013 Mini, 32 GB SSD, refurb

Your iOS devices rely on AirPrint to send print jobs to a printer. A printer would need to be AirPrint-ready to receive these jobs. Connecting a non-AirPrint printer to an Apple base station or any router does not make it AirPrint-ready.

For a number of HP printers another option is HP Print for mobile devices. You will need to check with your printer's user manual to see if your particular model has this option.

I cannot find your HP Laserjet 4100N on the list of AirPrint compatible devices. See the link below for more information.

About AirPrint - Apple Support

If HP does not offer a utility to enable AirPrint on your printer, you might want to take a look at a popular utility like Printopia to see if it will allow printing to your printer from your iOS devices.
