Macbook Pro 2017 + Thunderbolt Display

I have a Macbook Pro 2017 with 2 USB-C ports (model a1708) and a Thunderbolt Display (model a1407), I've tried connecting it using a 1m Thunderbolt cable to a Thunderbolt to USB-C adapter but its not recognised in system preferences

Is there any other way to connect?
