You own an older 2017, 5th gen iPad.

There is NO Apple Pencil compatibility with that model.

The 5th gen, 2017 iPad has missing hardware necessary to support the Apple Pencil.

You CAN use other third party smart, Bluetooth stylii with that iPad.

Look at Bluetooth stylii from Adonit ( I recommend the Adonit Pixel ), purchased directly from the Adonit website to ensure most up to date hardware firmware.

Also, look at this cheaper, up and coming stylus called the Sonar Pen that works across ALL iPads and uses audio signals instead of Bluetooth for both palm/hand rejection and pressure sensitivity of the pen.

Good Luck!
