Autocorrect fails to capitalize i’m But capitalizes the word after it.

The subject of this post is an example of what’s been happening on all my iDevices since iOS11 (I typed it on my iPad and it committed the error i’m Describing <- another example there), and I cannot find any mention anywhere of anyone else having the same problem.

Essentialy, the pattern is this: whenever I type a word that uses I in a contraction, if I use a lower-case “i”, it fails to capitalize that “i”, but instead automatically engages the SHIFT key for the next word I start writing, capitalizin its first letter.

Some examples (typing on my iPad right now):

When i’d Like to hear from you, i’ll Tell you.

Let Anne know i’m Going to the store because i’ve Got to buy that new iPhone.

If I capitalize the I myself as i’m Typing, it doesn’t happen:

When I’d like to hear from you, I’ll tell you.

Let Anne know I’m going to the store because I’ve got to buy that new iPhone.

Does anyone else have this same issue?

Anyone at all know how to fix this? It’s driving me crazy and i’m Constantly having to go back and fix it manually.

Thanks!

Hello mgummelt,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that when typing on your Apple devices that words like "I'm" are not automatically capitalized but the following word is capitalized. In a situation like this I recommend making sure both your iPhone and the keyboard are set up to use US English. The following articles will provide you with the steps on how to verify both the device and keyboard settings:

Change the language on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
About the keyboards settings on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Let us know how it goes.

Best Regards.

Both my iPad and iPhone are and have always been set to US English. This problem only started occurring around January with an iOS 11 update.

Additionally, i’ve Tried turning autocapitalization off then on again and, as you can tell, that has not fixed the issue.

However, i’ve Noticed that this does not happen in iMessages - i’m Not sure if it was happening before or not (I think it was), but it’s not now (as of iOS 11.4).
