How to get MY photos off my SON's iPad

I bought my son’s iPad when he was underage, so it was set up using my Apple ID. Everything was pretty much connected. For example, in order for him to purchase things, he’d have to come to me for me to sign in and approve each transaction.

Now he’s a teenager and he has his own Apple ID. But my photos are still ending up on his iPad, filling up his storage.

I see that there is a page where I can manage the cloud:

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage

I can see all the devices that I am signed into, including my son’s. I want to click “Remove” but what I don’t know is what will happen then? Is there any risk to all the stuff on his iPad if I click Remove?
.
Right now his iPad has a combination of all his photos and art, PLUS photos I have taken with my iPhone. But not all of them. I noticed that a photo I took from my iPhone this morning (and many others) have NOT gone to his iPad. Why would SOME of my photos go to his iPad, but not ALL?

How can I ensure that his stuff is safe AND separate us without losing anything? By the way, HE has a PC, not a Mac. Not sure if he can back stuff up to a PC.
I could back his iPad up to my MacBook, I suppose, but would I be in danger of wiping all MY stuff out?

This has all been a confusing nightmare. I would make a call to Apple, but I have not purchased any kind of support plan.

Thanks for any assistance.

The "your" is in fact referring to you as in the owner of the Apple ID that is being signed out of.

If your son has been adding data to your iCloud, like syncing contacts, or photos etc... its best to keep the data on the iPad instead of summarily deleting it all. That way it can be manually and selectively deleted as required. Once you sign out of iCloud, deleting the data manually from the device will not affect the data in iCloud.

When deleting data from the iPad, it does not touch anything in iCloud. That is anything that would be removed from the iPad by this would by definition have a copy in iCloud somewhere that remains untouched. That is a guarantee.

Data stored in iCloud is well whatever you have that gets stored in there from the different Apps that use it.

For instance the Contacts App, can and will store contacts in iCloud. You know they are in iCloud because the contacts belong to the iCloud group inside the contacts App. You can also verify this by logging into the iCloud.com website on a computer and opening the Contacts web App there to see your data.

Same thing applies to other apps that store items in iCloud such as Notes, Calendar, Reminders, and yes iCloud Drive and Photos (if using iCloud Photo Library).

You can also verify what iCloud Drive stores, by opening the Files App on your iPhone or iPad, and vewing the files under iCloud Drive folder.

If you cancelled the sign out., then to activate Find My iPad just flip the switch next to it in the iCloud section of the Settings App. Settings->Account->iCloud->Find My iPad.

However, there should be no real problem signing out and retaining the data on the iPad.

Once you sign your son into iCloud with his Apple ID, it will ask if you want to merge the existing data on the iPad with his iCloud.

At this point, iCloud is completely separated, and whatever is the manually deleted from his iPad will no longer affect your iCloud or devices.

There may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps. "...Log his iPad and iCloud account out of your Apple ID and into his "

Thank you for your quick reply. How would I do this? I will guess that I go to this page:

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage

...and click "Remove"? Is that right? I find the whole iCloud concept baffling, so I need super-simple instructions.

Are there any other steps I'd follow to do what you are suggesting? Also, right now I am doing all this on my MacBook. Do I need to be doing any steps ON the devices in question? I'd assume I can just do all changes here on the computer. Hope so! It's easier for me to type that way.

Thank you.

OK I began the first step you suggested. I went to my son's iPad, and sure enough there's my name at the top. It has my email/ID for the iCloud, and his email/ID for the Store.

I hit Sign Out down at the bottom of Settings like you said. It took me to a screen where I had to put in the password in order to cancel "Find My Ipad". OK so I did that.

Then I came to a screen which stopped me in my tracks. I am so scared to mess this up! It says "Keep a copy of your data on this iPad?" Who is the "your" they are talking about? If they are still talking about me (because I am the person signing out), then no, I don't want to keep a copy of MY data on my son's iPad. >>>But my son has always been creating and existing as me<<< on this iPad, know what I mean? If I erase MY stuff, am I not really erasing HIS too?

It assures me "Data removed from this iPad will still be available in iCloud." (Is it? How would I know?) Anyway, there are four toggle buttons that are currently set to "off." They are "Contacts, News, Reminders and Safari." I don't know or care about what to do with these. It's the very last line that has me scared: "Your iCloud Photo Library and any documents stored in iCloud Drive will be removed from this iPad." I have never been able to see what is stored in iCloud. Unlike a normal folder or drive where all documents are clear and easy to see, I don't think I have ever been able to see what is on my iCloud to know for sure that it's there before deleting what is on this iPad.

I may be at the end of the road. I seem to have no way to know what data exists where, what data is SAFE and backed up, before I pull the plug.

You were kind to try and help. I thank you for your patience and for making the effort.

By the way, now that I've decided I can't do this right now, how do I reactivate Find my iPad? As you'll recall I did the first step, which was to put in the password in order to disable Find My iPad, before abandoning the effort. As a result, I received the following email....

======

Find My iPhone has been disabled on xxxxx’s iPad.

With Find My iPhone disabled, this device can no longer be located, placed in Lost Mode, or remotely erased using icloud.com/find or the Find My iPhone iOS app.

In addition, your Apple ID and password will no longer be required for someone to erase, reactivate, and use your iPad.

=====

That sounds pretty awful so I should probably reactivate Find My iPhone until such time that I can separate us safely.
