Apple is correct. An eBay receipt only proves you purchased the iPhone from someone else. For all Apple knows, you may have purchased a stolen device.

Where that makes the most difference is how you're expecting the repair to be handled. If you're looking for warranty work, then there's no proof you were the original owner.

But, the original one year warranty is supposed to follow the device to any new owner. The trouble there can be proving the device is less than a year old. With an iPhone X, that's not an issue since they've only existed since November of 2017. Obviously, the device is going to be less than a year old and covered by the original warranty.

AppleCare+ is different. The original owner has to go through various confirmation steps to transfer that with the device.

So, it comes down to what you're expecting Apple to do. If the glass is broken, that's not a warranty covered item. Warranties cover manufacturing defects, not user inflicted damage. If you had AppleCare+, then you could get the glass replaced under that extended warranty fairly cheaply. But without it, you have to cover the cost.
