Apple is correct. An eBay receipt only proves you purchased the iPhone from someone else. For all Apple knows, you may have purchased a stolen device.
Where that makes the most difference is how you're expecting the repair to be handled. If you're looking for warranty work, then there's no proof you were the original owner.
But, the original one year warranty is supposed to follow the device to any new owner. The trouble there can be proving the device is less than a year old. With an iPhone X, that's not an issue since they've only existed since November of 2017. Obviously, the device is going to be less than a year old and covered by the original warranty.
AppleCare+ is different. The original owner has to go through various confirmation steps to transfer that with the device.
So, it comes down to what you're expecting Apple to do. If the glass is broken, that's not a warranty covered item. Warranties cover manufacturing defects, not user inflicted damage. If you had AppleCare+, then you could get the glass replaced under that extended warranty fairly cheaply. But without it, you have to cover the cost.
You'll have to contact Apple to determine what would be acceptable proof of purchase. Then you'll have to contact the eBay seller to get the acceptable proof of purchase.
Hi
You need to ask the seller to send you proof of purchase.
Cheers

yeah, the issue is my phone has been lost either by apple or the courier; ive contacted the original seller and he no longer has the proof of purchase. im unsure what to do now as i have been without my phone for some time now
Don't quote me on this, but I believe those include the necessary insurance against loss or damage.
Regardless of the ownership issue, UPS would be on the hook for the value of the lost item. It was in their possession at the time.
Did you insure the package? If so, file a claim.
i sent it via apples prepaid ups
