I suggest that you make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple store to have that checked. I've tested my device here at home, opening Messages and Camera, and holding my hand over the proximity sensor does nothing to my device. Those screens should not turn off at that point. It could be a hardware problem, and Apple can diagnose that for you.

Hey there,
I just had this same issue for the last couple of days. I powered off my phone and left it for a moment. Powered back up and it's back to normal. Also, I made sure all the apps were closed.
When in doubt reboot 🙂
Turning the screen off when covering the proximity sensor should only work when the device is in a phone call. The proximity sensor should not be functioning any other time. What are you doing when this occurs? What troubleshooting have you tried?
This issue is still happening to me on my iPhone X as well. I have the latest iOS update (11.4.1) and have reboot d my phone and it still happens super annoying. Any word on how I fix it/if it’s going to be fixed?
Hi, It happens whilst I’m using the camera, messages or any other apps. I’ve reset the phone and done software update but that’s it
Ok thank you for your help
You're welcome.
