No data or wifi, so messages come through as texts and then iMessages when I have data/wifi

Hi so my problem is when my wifi and data is turned off, when I receive messages they come through as texts (delayed a little) and then come through again as iMessage when I connect to wifi/data. How do I stop this? Is it a problem on my end or the other persons end? Really annoying to get messages come through twice. Thanks!

That is how imessage works, when it is unavailable it will send as a text and then as an imessage when you have data or wifi.

Don't turn off your wifi or data if you don't want that to happen.

If they have Send as SMS checked on their device, it will first attempt to send as iMessage, and then if it cannot deliver, it will send as SMS. However, if the iMessage queues, then it will send as soon as data is available, even if it was sent as SMS.

I would not recommend turning iMessage off and on a lot. It can really mess with your ability to send/receive iMessages, and if you have been sending iMessages, then you will continually get prompted to turn iMessage on if you attempt to send a message to another iPhone user.

I agree with Chris. Turning iMessage on and off is not a good thing. It will make matters worse. You could ask your friend to go to Settings>Messages>Send as SMS and turn it off. That way, when the iMessage fails to send, no SMS will send. Of course, if you don't make it back to cellular/WiFi before the iMessage is deleted from the queue (and no, I don't know how long that is), you may never get the message at all. Also, your friend may not want to do that. They may have other people who they want to be sure get the message regardless.

I understand the frustration with the situation, however given how you operate your device, you are best to try and live with the frustration of receiving the duplicate message, rather than risk not getting anything at all like Idris says. Your turning iMessage on and off will also frustrate the heck out of your friends as they attempt to send you messages, as it could impact their ability to send you things as well.
