Unsupported Apple ID

I have an Apple ID that I use regularly without a problem. I go to sign in to iCloud for the first time, using that ID, and it tells me: "Unsupported Apple ID / This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud. Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one." What is wrong with my current ID?
