iMessage not working on my new Mac

When I go to log into my iCloud account on my new Mac, it pops up with a message "an error occurred during authentication and on the side bar by my iCloud account it reads (inactive). I know that my iCloud is working and functional but I cannot get iMessage to work from it. Has anyone dealt with this specific problem and if so how do I solve it?
