iOS notifications for messages read on another device

I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 11.4, a MacBook Pro w/ Touchbar running High Sierra 10.13.5, and an iPad Pro with iOS 11.4. all synced with the same iCloud account.

When I receive a new message in the Messages app, if I read it on my MacBook Pro or iPad, I'll still get notifications for the new message on my iPhone up to hours later. This doesn't occur with my iPad or MacBook Pro if I read the new message(s) first on my iPhone.

I've tried restarting all my devices, disabling and re-enabling notifications for messages on all devices, changing the notification type (banner vs sound vs preview), removing my iCloud account and re-adding, etc.

It gets a bit annoying to have a new notification for each message received hours earlier. Is there any fix for this?

Sign out of iMessage on all devices on your iCloud account, restart all devices, then sign back into iMessage on them starting with iPhone (don't just turn iMessage OFF, actually sign out by tapping your ID in Settings/Messages).

Even if you had removed your iCloud account temporarily, that may have been only on the iPhone and all devices need to be disconnected at the same time (though removing the iCloud account entirely is probably not necessary).

Also, have you enabled iCloud Messages on all devices since it seems they're all up to date? This will keep iMessages (and SMS') in sync across all devices, but read/unread status should have worked regardless of the iCloud Messages setting.
