Can't see emojis from Galaxy phone

A friend of mine just got a new Samsung Galaxy 9 (I have a iPhone 7 Plus). When we text, he can see my emojis but I can't see his. All of his emojis come up as ? There is no black box around it or anything, just a ? where an emoji would be. Any ideas?

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.3.1

Not every emoji Why can't I see all the emojis? Sometimes they just appear as a square with a question mark inside. I have both friends with IPhone and Android devices and all of them can see those emojis. I just uploaded to IPhone 12 and it’s quite upsetting.

His Samsung may not be using officially released emojis. These are the only ones that are cross-platform.
