When I rotate my iPhone 6+ to get landscape view of a Safari page the left 40% of the screen is filled with a list of bookmarks (or other things) that I don't want, instead of providing a wider view of the page. I can't find any preference to get rid of this: is there a way?
Tap on the book icon next to the address bar, to close the Bookmark pane.

You only need to tap once. If you tap again it opens again. The icon will have a blue background when open, and no background when its closed. It changes the moment you tap on it. And the reading pane also opens/closes at that point too.
Tried that several times but it’s still there.
Try resetting from general and then try what the previous reply told you to do. I had the same problem and it went away once you press on the book icon next on the search
