Slow to connect bluetooth mouse and keyboard

When waking my iMac from sleep, the bluetooth Mighty Mouse and keyboard are very slow to connect. Sometimes they are so slow that the iMac goes back to sleep before connection is established. Occasionally when it goes back to sleep, nothing I can do will wake it up again, and my only recourse is a forced shutdown followed up by a restart. This obviously is not good.

Why are my bluetooth devices taking so long to connect, and is there anything I can do to prevent the 'going back to sleep' situation?

Thanks.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5), i7 2.8Ghz, 12 GB RAM

Hey Paul Fryer,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having connection delays with the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard when waking up your iMac from sleep. I can understand wanting this connection to be seamless and I have some info that can help. Besides these devices, do you have anything else connected to your iMac via Bluetooth or even other items in your area that use a Bluetooth connection? If so, you may be experiencing an interference that can contribute to this delay. The resource below can show you how to find out.
Potential sources of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference

If not, what we can try next is to reset the SMC. Resetting your Mac's System Management Controller (SMC) is sometimes necessary to restore normal lower level system functionality, particularly for power and hardware related issues like connectivity including USB ports, Bluetooth, Volume control, the Keyboard, etc. This link below can show you how.

Thanks for the input.

There are only 3 bluetooth devices near my computer, the mouse, keyboard and a keypad (which connects flawlessly when required). I also looked over the list of possible interference sources in the article you referenced, and none seem to apply.

So I did an SMC Reset and it did seem to help (sample of 2 wake-ups only, so far). I will see how it behaves in the next few days, and post back if there are still problems.

Paul.
