Notification Issues with Mail - High Sierra

I was having an issue in which there was a large delay between the notification sound for received mail, and the notification banner. I followed various suggestions I found in response to others who had had the issue (including turning notifications off and then back on again, and resetting the NVRAM) but now I don't get any banner/alert at all, just the sound!

Anyone have any ideas?
