My Macbook Pro is not using the entire display on my dell u3415w (black borders) ?

I am copying over a question - dell u3415w not using whole screen (black borders), so that this time it might show up under the right topic. Here is the rest of the description -

(I accidenttaly posted this to Mac Pro instead of Macbook Pro, but I do not have permissions to move it, so I will repost with apologies)

I have the DELL ultra-wide U3415W and when connected to my Macbook Pro 13, the size of the desktop is smaller than the actual screen area; I'm loosing about 2" horizontally and 1" vertically about.

I have connected via thunderbolt, mini-DP and DP-to-HDMI but can't get it to use the entire screen. It also remains true when I switch to a lower resolution. There is no underscan slider available in the settings. Is there a way to force underscan to appear? Are there better settings for the GFX card I can hack in?

The funny thing is, when I use the same cable/method to connect to my older Macbook Air (2013, Intel HD Graphics 5000) it fills the entire screen just fine. This leads me to believe it is a gfx card setting issue.

What are your settings in Sys Prefs > Displays?User uploaded file

I normally have the "best for Dell" ticked, but chose the scaled settings purposely to show the different resolution options. My machine is an MBP. Could it be that you need to adjust those settings or choose "best for your display"? And, what is the resolution on your external display compated to the ones showing in your Prefs?

Have you tried adjusting the actual Monitor's Aspect Ratio settings.

Looking around the monitor's manual, it appears a cause of black bars is possibly an incorrectly set Aspect Ratio.

https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_display_projector/esuprt_ display/dell-u3415w-monitor_user%27s%20g…

You can also run the Monitor's Built in Diagnostics, and see what they say.

The resolutions mentioned for the Mac are the Maximum the Macs can support with the Specific number of Monitors mentioned. The Mac is not in any way limited to just those resolutions however.

It is able to correctly output all the other supported resolutions.
