virus alert on safari browser screen

I'm using High Sierra 10.13.5 (17F77) on MacBook. After leaving the safari browser open for awhile on a blank opening page, I got a virus alert warning. I didn't do a screen shot but it looked very official with a trojan name and code. I was suspect just because I don't think Apple scans my laptop for malware or viruses. I've never signed up for any protection service. I have downloaded and used the free Dr. Antivirus app. I ran it after closing down safari and it found nothing. I thought it was weird that the browser was not on any page.

You have just been scammed. Macs do not get viruses. They potentially can get "infected" with malware/adware, which appears what happened in your case.

What I strongly recommend that you consider is to use either or both EtreCheck and/or Malwarebytes for Mac to both discover and remove any malware infections.

It's a scam. There are no viruses that affect Mac OS. You should also uninstall Dr Anti-Virus. All it's doing is scanning for what's not there. No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system.
