I am trting to import my pictures from my iPhone X to my pc/external hard drive. But EVERY picture I have taken in “portrait” mode converts to a blank AAE file and then has a lower quality/non edited picture next to the file. How do I get my pictures to load onto my pc exactly how they are/were taken on my phone? What’s the point of having a fancy camera if it can’t load to my pc to be saved?!

Ok....that was the problem. I was just viewing them in the window browser. Not importing them. When I click import it saved the original! Thank you!!!

I didn’t know about changing the format. So I tried what the article suggested and it is still doing it. Don’t know if changing the setting only works on future pictures?

You'll have to prevent the photos from being converted during the import.

When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iOS device to Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264.
You can change this import behavior in iOS 11. Go to Settings > Photos. In the "Transfer to Mac or PC" section, tap Keep Originals to prevent the media from being converted when importing.
