I’ve had to resort to using my iPhone 5S for a month however recently it’s becoming more and more unresponsive. I’ve factory reset the phone, however I still am unable to update to iOS 11 despite the fact there’s nothing on the phone. Is the 5S compatible with iOS 11? It gives me the option to do the update which leads me to believe it is, however it fails at the last moment

If it still does not work, then make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and install from there. It would also help if you identified any error you see, since you say "it fails at the last moment."

Yes, iPhone 5s is compatible with iOS 11. Are you trying to update via OTA or via iTunes?

If it,s a iPhone 5 it can only be updated to ios 10.3.3
