What motion replaces the double click on the home button that let you swipe up to close each running app? me

What gesture replaces the home button double click that allowed me to swipe up and close a running app on my iPhone 7?

Closing apps I have an iPhone 11 running the current IOS. I need to close down an app. I did what Apple suggested as in swiping up from the bottom of the home screen but nothing happens. I can swipe every direction except from the bottom up. So what am I missing? Thanks

Dose swiping up on iPhone Xs Max close the App? I'm wondering how to close apps on the iPhone Xs max. Does swiping up do this? On my old iPhone 6 closing apps required double pressing the Home button then swiping up to close various open apps.
