Apple News App won't refresh

iPhone 5 iOS 10.3.3

The Apple News app does not refresh (or update) some or maybe all topics. Here is the scenario: Open News, touch "Explore", tap "Sports" under "Browse Categories". I am presented with "Browse Channels" (NBC sports for example) and "Browse Topics". I go under that to "College Basketball". That category has not been updated or refreshed for over a week. And I tried several "topics" and none that I have tried have been updated for the same amount of time. Now I have not tried every single one but I tried enough to notice that something seems to be wrong. On the other hand, the "Browse Channels" is refreshed or updated every time I check. If I go back to the beginning, the place where I chose "Sports" and choose, for instance, "Politics", the same thing happens, the Channels are updated but the "Topics" is not. Same thing if I choose other categories, same thing. If I go to the bottom menu, the main 5 menu items (where I choose "Explore") and choose "For You", I get Top Stories and those are up to date, too. Also, my "Favorites" is up dated.

I have updated the iOS to most current. I have deleted and re-installed News. I have tried with both wi-fi and cellular data. I have just generally checked News settings for anything unusual. And News was working correctly up until about a week ago or maybe it has been more like 2 or 3 now.

After spending weeks searching for the answer to this and finding that nothing worked, I am so pleased I have finally fixed it by trial and error!


I have figured out that the news app stopped refreshing for me after I changed SIM cards or time zones / countries (not sure which). I had been travelling, so makes sense.


After I got to the new country, I needed to unfollow and then refollow all of my favourites - and then the ‘for you’’ feed refreshed again.


So happy to have it back and hope this helps someone else!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I see that you have a set of articles not updating as expected within your News app. I'd be happy to help!

There are a few troubleshooting steps I would recommend. Try the following, in order, testing after each:
Force quit, then re-open, the News app. Instructions on how to do that can be found here: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Force close the News app, then restart your iPad as detailed in this article:
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Check for updates to your iOS software and the News app itself.


To update your iOS, see: Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
To update your News app, open the App Store and click on Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All. Or, locate the News app specifically, and tap Update to install.
