Disable Snapshots

Hello!

MacBook Air (High Sierra 10.13.6) keeps hanging up in Disk Utility at "Checking snapshot X of X" (the number it hangs on changes every time).

I can't force-quit the application or restart the Finder. I have to force shut-down and then restart, which I can do, but I can't successfully complete a First Aid check.

What gives?

Can I disable this snapshot business?

As long as you have Time Machine turned on and your laptop is not connected to that drive, it will create what are called "local snapshots" which are incremental backups stored temporarily on your laptop until you plug in the TM drive again. It then transfers those backups and deletes them from your hard drive. The only certain way to disable them is to turn off Time machine.

Hi hltruelove,

It sounds like you're having some trouble with completing a First Aid check on your Mac. I want to help you get on a path to getting that fixed.

Since First Aid isn't completing, you may be having a hardware issue with the storage drive on your Mac. I recommend you bring your Mac in for service at the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Here you can locate the nearest service center:
Apple - Find Locations - Location Selector

We'll also want to make sure you have a backup if possible:

Before you return your Mac to us, be sure to enable FileVault and back up your data. You may need the backup if your Mac needs to be reformatted during the repair process. Apple isn’t responsible for lost data.

I hope that helps.
