Port forwarding on bridge mode

I have an airport time capsule as my main router, with various wifi extenders around my house, so I have the tc set to bridge mode. However it now won't let me port forward, which is an issue as I need to port forward to be able to create servers for my friends and I when we game. Can anyone help?

Then there is a router somewhere ahead of the Time Capsule, otherwise the Time Capsule would not work correctly in Bridge Mode. In other words, because you have another device somewhere that is functioning as the main router, the Time Capsule must be set up in Bridge Mode to work correctly.

If you do try to set up the Time Capsule as a second router......(do not try this)......this will create a Double NAT error on your network. Port Mapping is impossible with a Double NAT error.

You will need to get in touch with your Internet provider and ask them how to forward ports through their connection. Because the Time Capsule is set up in Bridge Mode, it will simply "bridge" or "pass through" the correct settings to your game console.

Finally, you should be aware that the Time Capsule was designed to work with a standard simple DSL or cable modem. Some things may simply not be possible with the type of connection that you are using.

So you are saying that the tc is not the router,

Yes, we have said this two times so far, and will say so again. You can prove this to yourself:

Open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Network tab

User uploaded file

Notice that the setting for the Time Capsule is "Off (Bridge Mode)". The "Off" means that all routing functions are turned "Off".....so the Time Capsule cannot be acting as a router. It can provide a wireless network in Bridge Mode, but it does not have to be set up as a router to do this.

I suspect that your provider may be taking some serious shortcuts with your service, and they may be providing you with a "Private" IP address.......when you should be receiving a "Public" IP address. A "Public" IP address must reach the Time Capsule if you want to set it up as the "main" router.

Open AirPort Utility again and click on the Time Capsule

In the smaller window that appears......look for the IP Address

You do NOT want to see an IP address that begins with "192.x", "10.x" or "172.x". If you do, ask your service provider to furnish you with a "Public" IP address. It will not begin with 192, 10 or 172.

The Time Capsule cannot be your "main" router if it is set up in Bridge Mode, although it can certainly provide a wireless network signal in Bridge Mode.

Your "main" router is another device......likely the one that you call your "modem". Port Forwarding must be set up on your "main" router......not on the Time Capsule.

If you are not sure if your modem is also router.......what is the make and model number of your "modem"?

Port Forwarding is usually not possible in your situation. You are using a shared network..

And those kinds of systems usually should be setup double NAT.. the reason is your entire system is exposed to everyone else on the central village wireless router.

It is easy to check.. from your computer open a terminal and type..

traceroute 8.8.8.8

You should see one private IP followed by a whole bunch of public IP.

So mine is like this.

traceroute 8.8.8.8

traceroute to 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

You can see the first address is my router. The second address is public.

In this setup I can forward the ports I need.

In a case where you have private IP allocated to the network from your ISP then port forwarding becomes impossible.

However with the TC in bridge a game console can open ports by UPNP but you cannot setup servers.. this is limitation of this kind of system.
