I’m unable to get this update to complete. It will attempt to download to the watch (series3) but fails on install. Anyone else having problems?

If you need help updating
Try these steps:
- Make sure that your Apple Watch connects to its charger.
- Restart your Apple Watch. Press and hold the side button until you see Power Off, then drag the slider. To turn your watch on again, press and hold the side button.
- Restart your paired iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then drag the slider. To turn your iPhone on again, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.
- Try to start the update again.
If the update won't start, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap General > Usage > Software Update, then delete the update file. After you delete the file, try to download and install watchOS again.

I ended up taking mine to authorized Apple dealer who spent 3 hours trying to update, them sent it to Apple repair and it was replaced with a refurbished watch - that doesn’t make me happy for a 2 1/2 month old watch. It’s a software issue.
Not sure what to tell you Branta_uk - but that is what they told me when I picked up the replacement watch - that there was a software issue, so maybe it's just certain ones that were manufactured that have the issue.
I had this problem too, restarted my watch, and now have a notification that I need to update my phone before I can update my watch. Haven't tried to update my phone yet, will have to try tonight, but hoping that fixes the problem.
To update to the latest watchOS 5, your iPhone has to be on iOS 12. That is a restriction in place for this update. Also, watchOS 5 will only run on the Apple Watch 1, 2, 3, and 4. It will not run on the original Apple Watch.
Update: I was never able to get this update to work. I also tried updating to watchOS 5, which ended up with my watch completely unresponsive. Opened a repair ticket and Apple was great at sending me a replacement, however even the new watch will not load the update. I still get a message stating the download failed. Also, there is no software update file listed within the watch app for me to delete. It’s not loading to the watch.
I've tried 3 times to install this update following your instructions and it fails to work. Please advise.

No, it’s a defect In your watch which happens to impact software updates. If the primary fault was a software issue every single user would have the same problem when they tried to update.
I did all you suggested. Now my phone is "hanging" on "checking for update" after 2 restarts of my phone!
