text to speech not working in high sierra?

Anyone else having problems getting 'text to speech' working in High Sierra?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1), 1 TB SSD

Text to speech My iMac's operating system is Mojave and the default command for text to speech is command plus M. This works fine when I highlight a page on Wikipedia.but when I try it on an eBook, nothing happens except for a pause followed by a low dong sound which I think means "** off I'm not going to read this". Sometimes it works OK with Microsoft Word Docs, sometimes it doesn't. The same with pdf documents. Any idea how I can I can get a more reliable response? At the moment it's so unreliable it's useless

text to speech on MacBook Pro My MacBook Pro will do text to speech in Safari and Word (using esc s), but will not read aloud in preview. How can I get it to read my documents in preview? My model is running 11.1.2 El Capitan. Thank you

MOJAVE AND SPEECH Since upgrading to Mojave on my MBP I cannot access the text to speech by using OPT + ESC keys. I use this featue extensively as a proofreading tool, to read out books and translation projects. Its a very cool tool to hear what is written back and catch errors or just to listen to a customized voice read text back. This feature was working fine for years on all my Macs. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks!

Had the same problem, solved it by downloading new system voices (System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > System Voices)
