text to speech on MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro will do text to speech in Safari and Word (using esc s), but will not read aloud in preview. How can I get it to read my documents in preview? My model is running 11.1.2 El Capitan.

In Preview, it won't speak unselected text, or text that is an image. Once you have selected the text, Edit menu : Speech : Start Speaking.
