Send text instead off imessage

Hi all, I’m using a iPhone 6s and a ipad on the same apple account, and I want to send a basic text message to someone who I chat to via iMessage but I’m having no joy. I’ve tried turning iMessage off on iPhone and it says I need to switch it on. If I’m in a non WiFi area how I’m I suppose to contact someone by the way it’s iphone to iPhone please help

I think those trying to help are confused about what you want to do. Do you want to send iMessages to this person, SMS messages, or MMS (picture) messages? If they have an iPhone you can always send iMessages, which can include pictures and text. iMessages can be sent over Wi-Fi or cellular data, so you only need one or the other (or both) on.

If you turn on "Send as SMS" the message will go as SMS/MMS ONLY if an iMessage is not delivered. Otherwise it will go as iMessage.

The only way to reliably send an SMS/MMS message to another iPhone is to log out of iMessage (not just turn it off) and stop using it. There is no way to force SMS to an iPhone if the other user has iMessage enabled and you do also.

If you want to send SMS you must have voice working on your phone; SMS uses the voice sidechannel. It never uses data.

If you want to send MMS you must have cellular data enabled; it cannot go as Wi-Fi. iMessage is the only one that can use either Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Why don't you use cellular data? Turning iMessage off/on will cause problems when trying to connect to someone that is using iMessage as well. iMessage uses data, and so it needs to be turned on. If you go to Settings>Messages>Send as SMS and turn that on, once you try sending as an iMessage, if it does not go through, it will go through as an SMS. You turning off iMessage has no impact on the person that you are messaging, and unless they turn iMessage off as well, it won't help. But again, turning iMessage off and on continuously will cause problems in messaging other iOS devices when done repeatedly.
