Mac opens to file with a question mark and command r doesn’t work

My mac book pro keeps opening up to a file with a question mark, and when I apply “command R,“ the Apple loading screen goes half way then stops and the screen goes black. What do I do?

There is an alternate path to getting to recovery mode. Since the question mark over the folder symbol shows it, you will most likely have to reinstall your OS and run first aid on your disk. When turning on, hold down the alt/Option key. Instead of selecting your main drive, select the disk called “Recovery-(insert macOS version here). This will boot you into recovery mode, since Command-R isn’t working.
