itunes now reports airplay device not compatible

I've been using a Denon receiver (AVR 2112ci) which has built in airplay to play music from my windows PC via itunes for years now. Recently I upgraded iTunes (12.8.0.150) and now I get the message: The Airplay device "Denon" is not compatible with this version of iTunes.

I have reset my receiver back to factory defaults, rebooted my PC, and windows updated my PC so that it is completely update to date. I have turned off my windows firewall. Nothing seems to matter.

My iPhone can use my receiver via Airplay no problem but it is running an old version of IOS (10.x).

In my reading it seems that something might have changed in terms of the airplay protocol that could explain this. Is that true? Am I out of luck on this?

itunes 12.9.2.6 finally fixed this for me. This happened to me a few months ago on my Pioneer VSX-1021 (my VSX-822 still worked). I updated itunes and pioneer firmware with no luck.

So for the past few months each time itunes wanted to update I said yes (normally I don't bother to update) and tested. TODAY it worked (didn't even reboot Win 7 PC).

Good Luck

Okay after a lot of work on this I have determined that one of two things is the case:

  1. Something in iTunes has changed and if so then the Denon receiver that I have needs a firmware update HOWEVER Denon is no longer updating this model. OR
  2. The airplay chip in my receiver is broken

In either case a new receiver that is a model that is supported by firmware updates and voila everything is working...

Same issue with my Denon AVR-3312 CI receiver and iTunes 12.8 on Windows 10.

It looks like Apple have decided NOT to include backwards compatibility with older AirPlay devices in this release of iTunes, which is very frustrating -- although not entirely surprising.

I've submitted a support ticket to Denon to ask if Airplay 2 will be supported on my receiver via a firmware update, but I'm not optimistic -- it's in both Apple's and Denon's interest for products to become increasingly obsolete so we have to keep buying new gear every few years! 😠

This works! BUT only the one speaker chosen by this method will play--the Airplay speakers that work through iTunes are turned off.

I have a Phillips Fidelio and get the message:

"The AirPlay device “Philips_Fidelio 04B81D” is not compatible with this version of iTunes."

Phillips' response:

Unfortunately I can't give you detailed instructions on how to fix the error message as it appears to be because of changes made by Apple to their software but here are a few suggestions:

- Check if you can select AirPlay 1 in iTunes settings

- Make sure that you are not trying to use features which are exclusive to AirPlay 2

- Contact the software developer for a possible fix that re-enables connectivity with AirPlay 1 speakers

- If it is not possible to enable AirPlay 1 compatibility in your software then it might be possible to downgrade to an earlier version which supports AirPlay 1

I couldn't find anything that allowed choosing Airplay 1 so waiting for Apple to fix this.

Same issue with Pioneer VSX-1021. The sound control panel work-around -- which works -- demonstrates that this is an iTunes issue, not an AirPlay issue or compatibility issue with the receiver. ENielsen indicates the update to iTunes fixes the issue. Is this the iTunes that comes with Mojave? I have the latest version for High Sierra 12.8.0.150 and it does not play through the Pioneer. Since Mojave will break non-64-bit apps, I've not made the transition yet.
