No audio, coreaudiod not running on MB Air

I'm trying to get the audio working on an Air running MacOS10.12. No sound through either headphones or internal speakers although System Preferences recognizes when the headphones are plugged in and shows internal speakers under output when no headphones connected. All of the sound controls are grayed out. The owner of the Air has Avast anti-virus running and has FileVault enabled, if that makes any difference.

I noticed that coreaudiod is not running and have been unable to get in to start. I've tried resetting NVRAM and SMC a few times. I tried starting in Safe Mode. I've tried inserting and removing the headphones several times. Nothing works.

Suggestions?

I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

Sound – Troubleshooting Internal Speakers

Try cleaning out the headphone jack and then insert a headphone several time. Sometimes the jack gets stuck.

Sound problems

In the Terminal, type that:

sudo killall coreaudiod

And in the sound preferences, make sure your internal speakers (and not HDMI or other device) is selected.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Thanks for responding. I tried that command in Terminal with no luck. She can't uninstall Avast. Her school requires it. The Avast has been running for awhile and this problem is new. In Sound Preferences, internal speakers is selected. I did try inserting headphones several times. The Mac recognizes when headphones are plugged in but no sound comes out of them. I'm pretty sure the fact that coreaudiod is not running is the key to the problem.
