Safari ...there must be an option but where?

When I add a site to my Favorites bar in Safari it adds it on the right, which means it is hidden at the bottom of the dropdown. This started about 5 months ago and I can not find the option to add a Favorite to the left of the bar, which has always been the normal behavior.

I have another computer running Sierra, with bookmarks synced on iCloud. On that computer a new bookmark is added to the left of the favorites bar. There must be an option. Any ideas please? I would be eternally grateful for any help resolving this major irritation.

I don't think reinstalling the OS will help. On computer 1.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I reinstalled Sierra this morning and the bookmarks are being added to the left again. I have made a screen recording to prove it! I will let you know if it sticks.

Over the last few months I have noticed a couple of instances of preference settings being lost. Then, a couple of days ago, I noticed that my screen shots were no longer accompanied by the SLR mirror-flipping sound. I found that the system alerts were unticked in the system preferences. There was no way I did that. So, there seems to be instability somewhere in the machine, either hardware or software.

It occurred to me that it might have something to do with my SSD, which is sort of near the bottom of the price range. So, I've changed it for a Samsung 850. We will see if that improves things. I doubt it, but I needed more capacity anyway.

Jul 18, 2018 8:29 AM in response to Eric Root

Great question Eric!

Comp. 1 adds the bookmark on the right and it shows up on the right on Comp. 2, which is iCloud sync'd.

Comp. 2 adds the bookmark on the left and it shows up on the left on Comp.1.

The problem is therefore on Comp.1, which is my main machine. I'm hoping the answer does not mean reinstalling the OS. But discussing the problem made me wonder what happens if I delete Safari plist. I don't know why I did not think of it before as I have done it plenty of times for other apps. It's good to talk.

The problem persists under all these conditions.

Ran EtreCheck got lots of alerts, which was hardly surprising. A lot from VNC, which I recall vaguely. I don't think it is required for anything I do these days so will probably torch the files. This computer is running a freshly installed copy of Sierra, ie. did not update from an earlier version. However, I did migrate my applications from another SSD, but I moved files by drag and drop, so it was not a full migration.

Now, I am beginning to doubt my senses or think there must be a ghost in the machine.

I reinstalled Sierra selecting the option that maintains the rest of the data on the disk. When I booted up, my user account was intact and my keyboard shortcuts were still there: ie. I use command-F to do a find-by-name search. So far so good.

I was very happy to find that my bookmark problem was fixed and new ones were inserted on the left of the favorites bar. But then the next morning the problem was back and bookmarks were adding to the right again. I then cleared all the user and systems caches but that made no difference.

Any ideas please?

Just an FYI:

The performance on the EtreCheck above was "below average". I just ran it again after the reinstall:

EtreCheck version: 4.3.6 (4D041)

Report generated: 2018-07-28 15:41:11

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 2:56

Performance: Excellent

I don't know if it signifies but the run time was over two minutes less on exactly the same machine except the reinstalled system on the new SSD mentioned above. BTW, the new SSD had a CCC clone of the old SSD before I performed the reinstallation.
