My MacBook Pro 2018 version speakers are crackling.

Hello. A few days ago I got the new MacBook Pro 2018 15in version. I’ve noticed since yesterday that my MacBook Pro speakers were crackling randomly. I’m not sure if since this is a new release that there are bugs in the software or if it’s an actual defect. Because before yesterday, I haven’t experienced this issue. I resetted the NVRAM and did a diagnostics test with no issues. After about 10 minutes of use that’s when it does it. Then stops. I think I might hopefully but not hopefully have to get it replaced since it’s under the warranty still. I did nothing to it. So this is dissapointing to me.

Hey! I had the same issue. I think I've managed to fix it by making sure that my MIDI output is set to 48.000 Hz. Go to Audio MIDI Setup settings, under Macbook Pro Speakers set the output to 48.000 Hz if its anything else (like 44). You might have a software installed that has changed the Hz value (and possibly some other under-the-hood sound settings as well). So far it has fixed the issue to set it back. I have not yet updated to Mojave, but has installed all updates up until that. See picture below.

I tried to understand if this is a hardware or software problem. I started playing a game via Bootcamp and instead of using the built in speakers, I connected a bluetooth speaker. I was playing the game for a about an hour and surprise the sound was excellent. Then I disconnected the speaker by swiping it off, so the system went back to the built in speaks. After half an hour the cracklings returNed! THIS IS A HARDWARE ISSUE! Does it mean its a faulty device? Could I get my money back?

I don't know about anybody else, but after installing the Supplemental Update 2, my MacBook Pro 15" 2018 no longer outputs the crackling noise.

This evening, I set the microphone and speaker's sampling format to 44100 Hz and began playing back music on iTunes. Before the update, I would normally hear the noise in about an hour. I left my MacBook Pro to play music for about three hours and so far I am not hearing any noises.

I have also heard from others that the update did not fix the noise problem for them so I'll need to monitor for a week before I can conclude the issue is fixed (for me, at least).

I'm wondering what else may have improved (hopefully) in this 1 GB update. I'll be looking out for the sleep/wake issue this week too.

Hey everyone!

So today i picked my 2nd replacement laptop as i really took it to Apple. I was in touch with senior advisors and basically today when i went into my local apple shop i was treated really well and they gave me my new laptop and even gave me a $250 refund to apologise for everything. I took it upon myself today to start my new laptop from scratch and right now i have not heard any crackling. I am slowly but surely adding all the applications i need and sorting everything out but touching wood cause i havent heard anything yet.

If anybody wanted my advice i would strongly recommend you keep super calm and collective and express your "un satisfying taste" towards your new laptop and just see what apple says. as i said before , not sure if this is the final fix yet but im hoping to **** it is cause this has been going on since the first release of the 2018 mac book pros.

Hope this helps <3

I'm from Russia, I bought a MacBook Pro 15, 2018 24 August, and I also had this problem with the sound, after 30-40 minutes of work in Adobe Premiere.

I read a lot of complaints and tips on the Internet and took advantage of one of them: changed the MIDI keyboard settings from 44.00 to 48.00

Then I installed the recent update # 2 for MacBook Pro 2018.

And now this problem is no longer on my laptop.

Can assume that this problem is someone could damage speakers or sound card. And if after the update you continue to have problems with the sound, it is possible that something in your laptop is spoiled because of the problem.

And those who have everything fixed with the update, so they did not have time to deteriorate.

But this is only my personal speculation.

Funny. About 2 months ago someone posted a very similar solution: change the audio here from the default 48k to 44.1k. I did that and it fixed the problem! 100%, and ever since, except.... A few days ago I did the Security Update 2018-002 (OS v10.13.6, High Sierra), and lo and behold the problem came back! So we know absolutely that this is a software problem! A SOFTWARE problem. Getting a new replacement machine with the same software level is pointless. I went back to Audio MIDI Setup and tried changing the MBP Speakers setting back to 48k just to see. Each time I changed it to 48k it jumped back to 44.1k, repeatedly. And the problem remains!

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, IdentifiedGamer!

I understand you've noticed crackling in your speakers recently, that does not happen consistently. I'd be happy to provide information that may help you resolve this issue.

Have a look at this article: Get help if the internal speakers on your Mac don't make sound

Check your sound settings

If you still can't hear sound from the internal speakers after updating your computer's software, check your sound settings.

First, disconnect any external audio devices from your computer. Also disconnect any cables from the USB, FireWire, or 3.5mm audio ports.

  1. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. Select Sound.
  3. Click the Output tab, then select Internal Speakers. If you don’t see Internal Speakers as an option in the Output window, contact Apple Support.
  4. If the volume slider is set low, move the slider to the right and test again.
  5. If the Mute checkbox is selected, deselect it and test again.
  6. If you still don’t hear any sound, contact Apple Support.

Check the line-out port on your Mac

If the Output pane lists Digital Out instead of Internal Speakers, check the line-out port on your Mac.

First, disconnect any external audio devices from your Mac. Also remove any cables from the USB, FireWire, or 3.5 mm audio ports. Then check to see if the line-out port is lit by a red light. If it is, your Mac might need service.

If the issue persists, please reach out to Apple Support for further assistance.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Have a great day!

You are not the only one with this issue. There's currently a thread at MacRumors MacBook Pro 2018 - Speakers Crackling | MacRumors Forums with a lot of people with the new Macbook 2018 and the same problems.

It happens on both MacOs and Bootcamp. Restarting the application or game often solves it, but as it happens within 10 minutes of starting a game, restarting it each time is just no option. There are people that have brought back their MBP and got a replacement but those had the same problems.

So it seems like it is a real issue, let's just hope that they can fix it through software.

This is probably a problem with the T2 co-processor as some news were quoting these had some other problems and they also control the sound. I have the same problem on my iMac Pro... sound cracking, doesn't matter if I'm using external or internal speakers, it happens on both so it has to be a chip issue. Just to clarify there are two scenarios: 1) Sometimes it is just momentary "one-off" crack or pop and then sound goes back to normal. 2) The sounds cracks and keeps cracking until the output is changed. Changing from one output to another momentarily resets the problem though, but doesn't prevent it from appearing again later.
