Cannot select songs from Itunes for slideshow

I have a problem selecting songs from my Itunes library to add to my Photos slideshow. 90% of the songs are greyed out. Of those not greyed, there seems no commonality between them...some are songs that I've already played a few times in Itunes, some are songs I have not played at all. Practically all of my music has no DRM, none is in the cloud. My itunes library is organised. I have noticed that most solution to this problem advise that DRM protected songs, or those in the cloud are not accesible, but this isn't my situation. My itunes library file (the .itl file) is on my local hard disk, but the media files sit on a network server - I thought it might be that, but some files are playable even though they are on the server, and many are not. Any ideas would be welcome!

Well, good news, (at least for me!), setting up a new library and a new media folder on my local drive did the trick. After doing this I could see and access all songs in the new media folder and use them in my Photos slide show.

What I did:

  • Created a new Itunes library. Close Itunes, open again pressing option key, create new library.
  • Created a new media folder on my hard drive. My existing media folder is on my network drive which I suspect may have contributed to the problem.
  • Copied the songs I wanted to the new media folder.
  • Populated the new library with the songs on the new media folder, and set that folder as the preferred folder in Itunes.
  • Opened Photos...and there they were!

Hope this helps someone.

Practically all of my music has no DRM, none is in the cloud.

Have you checked this recently? Perhaps a recent iTunes update enabled cloud features or you accidentally enable Apple Music, since iTunes keeps nagging to use these features.

Have you checked the file format of the songs you want to use and cannot use in the slideshow? You can see this in the Info panel for the song.

Even songs purchased from iTunes may be protected, if you purchased them long ago.User uploaded file

Thanks, but it did not work. The behavior is very strange...when I logged out and in again, only purchased songs were now available. Everything else grey, including the songs that were selectable before! I'm going to try setting up a new itunes library with just the songs I want for the slideshow locally to see if that makes it better. Will update.

I also have this issue, I followed your instructions to check if the file was protected and it is not noted. However, even music I purchased years ago will not download. I looked at the one song that is available to use for the slideshow and the file content looks exactly the same as the ones I can not use...

Ideas for how I can put music on a slideshow asap? Thanks in advance for any help

If I bought it outright from iTunes then shouldn't I be able to use it for a slide show?

Yes, you should. Unless you purchased an item that is still protected. But the newer items at the iTunes Store are usually not protected.

When you are viewing the song in iTunes, is there a download arrow, when you view the album? Even a purchased song may still need downloading.
